Celebrate “Independents Days” by going local!
July 1-6 is the first annual Independents Days- a Think Local First campaign being launched by the Susquehanna Sustainable Business Network, in partnership with Fig, James Street Improvement District, Downtown Investment District, and Venture Lititz, to raise awareness of the importance of supporting local, independent businesses.
Why local and independent? Small local businesses are the largest employers nationwide, have less negative impact on the environment, give an average of 350% more support to community groups than national chains, and keep more money circulating in the local economy. For every dollar a customer spends in an independent business, 45-70 cents stays in the local economy and tax base. For every dollar spent in a chain, only 14 cents stays.
Local, independent businesses throughout Lancaster and York counties will be holding special events and offering incentives (valid only during Independents Days)- be sure to go out and give the following businesses your support:

The Longest Walk 2008
The purpose of the Longest Walk 2 is to continue and carry the message from the Longest Walk of 1978: The Longest Walk is an Indian spiritual walk, a historical walk; and it is a walk for educational awareness to the American and the world communities about the concerns of American Indian people. We will carry the message of Renewing the Spirit by Walking in the Footsteps of our Ancestors. This walk is to commemorate the Longest Walk in 1978- those who walked then and those who walk now. We are walking to bring awareness of the struggle to protect Mother Earth and sacred sites. The Longest Walk 2 is a peaceful, educational and spiritual effort to engage with the public about restoring harmony with the environment by leading an effort to clean up the lands surrounding our highways.
